When you stand on the slopes of Martinborough’s southern most vineyard, you are standing on sacred ground.

Wharewaka, one of New Zealand’s very first sheep stations was situated here, and the grapes of Hillview Estate have been enriched by over 170 years of hard work and a love of the land.

James Thyne planted the vineyard in Sauvignon Blanc, and a small area of Pinot Noir 20 years ago on 13 hectares (40 acres). The gentle slope, heavy clay soils, high levels of UV light and cool nights allow for long ripening periods.

This produces a Sauvignon Blanc style that mimics the Sancerre region, with less of the razor sharp acidity of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. It tends to be highly aromatic, with intense flavours of pineapple, peaches and lime with a lively finish.

The iconic sheers on the Pinot Noir label represent the toil of a time gone by on the property, but a time far from forgotten. The 2021 vintage has delicate notes of red fruit, herbs, floral hints, tea fragrances, dark cherry, boysenberry and subtle barrel spice.
